AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)

A hypothetical AI that matches or exceeds human cognitive ability across all tasks.

Also known as: AGI,artificial general intelligence

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a hypothetical AI that can match or exceed human cognitive performance across essentially all economically valuable tasks. Today, we have very capable narrow AIs — ChatGPT writes well but cannot drive a car; Tesla's Autopilot drives but cannot write an essay. AGI would do all of these and more, generalising the way humans do. As of 2026, there is no broadly accepted definition of when an AI counts as "general enough" — and no widely agreed AGI has been achieved. Predictions range from "5 years away" (some optimists at OpenAI and Anthropic) to "decades away" (Yann LeCun and many academic researchers). The genuine answer is: nobody knows.
