The defining feature is autonomy: the AI decides the next step instead of you scripting every action. Agentic AI in 2026 is the biggest shift in the AI industry since ChatGPT launched. The technology works for narrow tasks (email handling, code refactors with clear scope, structured data extraction) and still fails on open-ended creative or judgement work. Expect steady improvement through 2027 rather than a sudden breakthrough — the bottleneck is reliability, not capability.
