Sovereign AI refers to AI models built, trained, hosted, and governed within a country's borders, typically with state backing or strategic intent. The bet: critical AI capability is too important to rely on US providers alone. By mid-2026 every major economy has at least one sovereign AI project: France (Mistral), UAE (Falcon / TII), India (BharatGPT, Krutrim), Japan (Sakana AI), Singapore (Sea-LION), South Korea (HyperCLOVA), the EU collectively (Aleph Alpha, HelixionAI). Most sovereign models still trail Anthropic and OpenAI on raw capability but match them on local-language tasks, compliance posture, and procurement friction. The strategic logic is durable; the technical gap is narrowing.
