GPT-5 is OpenAI's flagship model, released in early 2026. Compared to GPT-4, it brought stronger reasoning, better tool use, longer context (400k tokens), and dramatically reduced hallucination rates. It powers ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, and most OpenAI API calls. Pricing: $5 input / $15 output per million tokens, with prompt-caching halving input cost. On reasoning benchmarks (GPQA Diamond, MMLU) GPT-5 leads or ties Claude Opus 4.7 and Gemini 3.5 Pro. On coding benchmarks Claude Opus 4.8 has now taken the lead. For most users, GPT-5 remains the safest default — most polished UX, biggest plugin ecosystem, and best voice mode.
